Wood - Sheesham, Mango, Acacia, Reclaimed Teak

Wood is one of our planets most precious yet sustainable resource and as a manufacturer we infuse a new life into this natural material. There is a warmth to genuine wood furniture, there is a healing power to the touch of a wood surface and its beautiful grain that cannot be replicated.

Dalbergia Sisso is the plant scientific name for Sheesham wood (also referred to Rosewood). Sheesham is a fast growing hardwood of density which is strong and durable after treatment. Heartwood is brownish in colour and rich grain patterns while the sapwood is whitish. Sheesham is easy to machine and also takes well to polish and finishes to a smooth surface. The well-defined grain pattern of Sheesham wood gives it unique colouring that makes each piece of Sheesham wood furniture unique and exquisite.

Mangifera Indica is the plant scientific name for Mango wood, that comes from a fruit bearing tree. Mango wood is highly sustainable hardwood due to its cultivation as a fruit tree having density of which is durable after treatment. The natural colour of mango wood is light to golden brown. However, mango wood is often beautifully discoloured due to ‘spalting’ referring to the different colours wood can turn as a result of fungus. This effect is desired by artisans who work with this wood. Spalted mango wood contains streaks of colour ranging from light beige to black, but also including green and yellow tones. Mango wood shows prominent grain patterns, similar to oak and mahogany. Mango wood is receptive to wood staining.

Acacia Nilotica is the plant scientific name for Acacia wood. It is a strong hardwood of density that is moderately heavy, durable and looks quite good with its eye-catching color and straight/wavy grain pattern. The heartwood is reddish brown in colour, while the sapwood is yellowish-white. The wood is easy to work with for carpenters and the texture of the wood allows for a smooth fine finish, although the wood colour reacts to sunlight.

By using reclaimed teak, SHPL offers an environmentally responsible alternative that is preferred by many customers. Our reclaimed teak is very mature as it comes from old structures such as palaces, houses, bridges and railroad tracks. The wood colour and pattern has variations reflective of the diversified lineage that makes each piece of furniture truly unique. Due to the reclaimed natures pegs have to be used to prepare the wood for reuse. Wood still allows for a smooth fine finish.

Like any other wooden furniture, keep your furniture away from direct sunlight or water. This helps to keep your furniture from losing its natural lustre and retains colour over longer periods of time; it also helps to avoid cracks, swelling and warping. Always use coasters and placemat on tables and wipe spills immediately. Clean your furniture with a damp cloth. Remember to wipe the surfaces in the direction of the grain. Use beeswax every three months to retain the sheen. Apply beeswax with a soft cloth, in the direction of the grain, and then buff with a soft and lint-free cloth.
